Here's a peek at our Science Discovery Board.
Experiments completed along with their own vocabulary words.
And yes, there will be a test (but not for you).
And our word for this lesson?
COLLOID:
a special kind of mixture in which particles of one type of material
are suspended in another kind of material.
(the straightforward fourth grade definition)
In other words?
Blue Goo.
COLLOID:
how to keep a fourth grader happy and busy in the name of science
(the mom definition)
Want to make your own colloid?
All you need is:
1 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup water
blue (or other color) food coloring
a medium bowl
someone willing to get their hands dirty in the name of science
1. Put the cornstarch into the bowl.
2. Pour in the water. Add a few drops of food coloring to the mixture.
3. Using your hands squish the cornstarch and water together. It will get messy but keep you mesmerized.
Is it a solid? Is it a liquid? NO- it's a colloid! Now don't you feel smart? ;)
Cheers!
